WEEK 8
The readings this week were about writing for the media. I think it was really important as this is one of the most important aspects of Public Relations. The readings pointed out that journalists are often suspicious of media releases written by PR practitioners as they think they are often concealing things. I agree with this, as I think that is sort of our job. Not to conceal things from journalists, but sometimes it is better for the company for the media to not know certain things.
The readings made me think more about PR theory/practice in that we should know how to write well and structure news stories. It made me think more about how the course at uni is structered. I like that we have to do Intro to Professional Writing before the Public Relations course so we learn how to write a media release, and the basics of journalistic writing like the inverted pyramid and news values. I like how I know a little about writing but I'd like to learn more about it before getting a job in the PR profession.

I agree with your comment about writing, i too believe it is a highly important aspect of what we do. Also i feel that the fact we had to do Professional Writing as apart of our PR course is good in that i now know how to write using the inverted pyramid style as well as the news values.
However i do not necessarily agree with your belief that it is our job to conceal things from the public and journalists. Whilst to some extent, yes we may have to conceal information at some point in time however it is not something that dominates our daily work as it is for this reason the many journalists do not trust PR practitioners.
Thanks Kristen! You're the reason why journalists hate us! Where have you been for the last 9 weeks with nearly every reading telling us that PR is about being ethical and honest....but we all know that text book PR and the dirty tactics of the real world don't always co-exist...
I agree with you about the value of the Intro to Professional Writing course. It's fun to read about the really media releases and just be like "ugh inverted pyramid style duh...."
Mmm I love seeing what students are taking out of lectures and readings. Good comments too!
Overall a good effort on this blog.
